This time in Qingdao, I stayed at MG Hotel St Michael's Cathedral, Qingdao for three consecutive days. When choosing accommodation before departure, I only wanted to find a place close to the seaside. After staying, I realized that this Republican style hotel hidden on Zhongshan Road's old street directly maximizes the transportation convenience and surrounding life of Qingdao's old city area, making it the best solution for short trips to Qingdao.
Its traffic configuration fully meets all the travel needs: it only takes 620 meters to walk out of Qingdao Station, and it takes less than 10 minutes to walk to the hotel door. Dragging luggage along the shade of wutong trees on Zhongshan Road, the whole journey is a smooth old city path, without going around alleys or crossing overpasses. There are multiple bus stops within 300 meters of the surrounding area, with multiple routes leading directly to core attractions such as Laoshan, Badaguan, and Wusi Square. If you don't want to squeeze into the subway, you can take the bus to leisurely explore the entire city of Qingdao. Going to Jiaodong Airport is also very worry free. Hotels can help book airport pick-up and drop off services in advance, so you don't have to compete for ride hailing services in the traffic around Qingdao Station. For this trip to Qingdao, I specifically chose to stay at MG Hotel St Michael's Cathedral, Qingdao. From the moment I pushed open the hotel's wooden door on Zhongshan Road, I knew I had chosen the right starting point for this trip. After staying for three consecutive days, I didn't feel rushed like a typical hotel near a scenic area. I truly stayed in the bustling old town of Qingdao.
It is less than 10 minutes' walk from Qingdao Station to the hotel. Dragging suitcases full of luggage, you can walk along the shade of the old wutong trees on Zhongshan Road. All the way is the scenery of century old buildings, without any sense of struggle. The hotel is located at the intersection of Zhongshan Road and Hubei Road. As soon as I opened the door, the hustle and bustle of the commercial street outside was immediately blocked behind me. The pure solid wood old furniture has a warm sense of the times, and the warm yellow light falls on the retro decoration, like stepping into the old light of Qingdao. The front desk staff handed me a free cup of sour plum soup, and the heat that had just dried up from outside dissipated in an instant. They also took the initiative to hand me a handwritten map of the old city's niche shopping and eating areas, indicating many small restaurants that locals often go to, saving me a lot of time searching for guides.
The tatami room I live in is not spacious but clean and cozy. The natural latex mattress has just the right softness and hardness. I spent the whole day strolling by the seaside, enjoying the sea breeze all afternoon. As soon as I lay down on the bed, my exhaustion quickly dissipated. The room is equipped with several different types of pillows, including memory pillows, latex pillows, and buckwheat pillows, which can be chosen according to one's sleep habits. It is really thoughtful for those who recognize beds. 24-hour circulation of hot water is stable and sufficient. After taking a walk on the pier at night, taking a comfortable hot shower makes the whole person feel refreshed. The high-speed WiFi signal in the whole house is full, and I want to sit by the window and take photos of the seaside. The whole process is smooth without any lag.
The facilities in the hotel exceeded expectations completely. In the lobby on the first floor, you can enjoy authentic Qingdao fresh beer that has just been transported from the brewery. After strolling through the streets, you can sit down and order a cup, paired with a plate of local floral hair, and chat with nearby guests casually. The sense of unfamiliarity during the journey is instantly gone. Downstairs is the Republic of China Seafood Dumpling Restaurant, where you don't have to queue up at popular restaurants around the scenic area to enjoy freshly made mackerel dumplings. The seafood is supplied directly from the dock on the same day, fresh and authentic. If you don't want to go downstairs, you can directly order room service and enjoy authentic Qingdao flavors without leaving your home.
The best part is the surrounding location: you can walk 360 meters to St. Michael's Cathedral, over 700 meters to the wharf, and 1.8 kilometers to the Navy Museum. You don't have to wake up early to catch a bus, you can leisurely stroll around the core attractions of the old town. The surrounding area is full of local snack shops that have been open for decades. You can eat authentic Potsticker and sweet potatoes in Qingdao when you turn a corner. You don't need to find food in the shopping streets where tourists gather.
I have stayed in hotels around scenic spots many times in Qingdao, and this is the only time that makes me feel that I am not rushing through this seaside city, but really following the rhythm of the old city, slowly catching the wind of the seaside and the temperature of the old buildings.
